Last week, something happened that made me stop scrolling and actually think. Adam Wathan, the creator of Tailwind CSS, dropped a bombshell in a GitHub comment: 75% of their engineering team was gone. Laid off. Not because Tailwind was failing — quite the opposite. The framework is more popular than ever, hitting 75 million downloads a month. The 2025 State of CSS survey shows 51% of developers use it.

So what the hell happened?

Revenue collapsed by 80%. Traffic to their documentation dropped 40% since early 2023. And the culprit? Us. Well, more specifically — the AI coding tools we've been enthusiastically adopting.

The Funnel That AI Broke

Here's how Tailwind Labs made money: developers would Google something like "tailwind flex center," land on the documentation, see the beautiful component examples, discover Tailwind UI and Tailwind Plus (their premium offerings), and some percentage would buy. Classic content-to-conversion funnel that's powered a million SaaS businesses.

But then Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, and the rest of the AI coding tools arrived.

Now when a developer needs to center a div with Tailwind, they don't Google it. They ask their AI assistant. The assistant answers instantly, generates the code, maybe even implements it directly in the codebase. No website visit. No discovery of premium products. No sale.

Wathan put it bluntly in his podcast "We Had Six Months Left": the decline was so gradual that he didn't realize how bad things had gotten until he finally did proper revenue forecasting over the holidays. The decline was so gradual that it felt normal — until it wasn't. By the time he ran the numbers, they had about six months of runway left at their current burn rate.

The Irony Is Almost Poetic

Let this sink in: AI tools have made Tailwind CSS more useful and more widely adopted than ever before. And that same adoption nearly killed the company behind it.

This isn't just a Tailwind problem. Stack Overflow has seen dramatic declines in new question volume. Documentation sites across the industry are reporting similar drops in traffic. The entire economic model of "free content + premium products" that's sustained developer tools for years is crumbling under the weight of AI assistance.

When someone asked Wathan to add an llms.txt endpoint — essentially making their docs even more AI-friendly — he declined. Not because he's anti-AI, but because making the documentation more accessible to LLMs would only accelerate the loss of their only real revenue source. From a business standpoint, it's a completely rational decision that still feels wrong somehow.

What This Tells Us About the AI Coding Revolution

Here's where it gets interesting for those of us watching the AI space. The fact that Tailwind's business model got disrupted this hard, this fast, is perhaps the most concrete evidence we have of just how dramatically AI coding assistants have changed developer workflows.

Think about it: this isn't some theoretical benchmark or a survey asking developers if they "plan to use AI." This is 40% less documentation traffic and 80% revenue decline — real, measurable impact on a real business that serves millions of developers.

The numbers in the AI coding market tell the same story from the other side:

  • GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor (via Anysphere) have all crossed the $1 billion ARR threshold
  • The AI coding assistant market is now valued at around $4 billion
  • 85% of developers regularly use AI tools for coding as of late 2025
  • Seven companies have crossed the $100 million ARR mark in record time

The landscape has consolidated around clear categories: IDE-native agents like Cursor and Windsurf, terminal-based tools like Claude Code and Codex CLI, and enterprise platforms like GitHub Copilot. Google just launched Antigravity, their agentic development platform. JetBrains has Junie. The market is crowded and moving fast.

Claude Code alone already contributes roughly 10% of Anthropic's revenue. Cursor hit a $9 billion valuation. These aren't experimental side projects anymore — they're fundamental infrastructure for how software gets built.

The Uncomfortable Truth

I've been using Claude Code, Gemini CLI, and GitHub Copilot daily for months now. The productivity gains are real. I can scaffold entire features in minutes that would have taken hours. Complex refactoring that used to require careful, methodical work now happens in a conversation. I recently built an entire AI chatbot in days using these exact tools.

But the Tailwind situation forces us to confront something uncomfortable: every time an AI assistant answers a question that we would have Googled, some documentation site doesn't get a visit. Every time it generates code that we would have researched, some tutorial doesn't get read. Every time it implements a pattern that we would have looked up, some Stack Overflow answer doesn't get viewed.

The economic model that sustained a lot of the open-source ecosystem was built on humans visiting websites. Traffic meant discovery, discovery meant conversion, conversion meant revenue, revenue meant more development. AI breaks that loop.

What Comes Next?

The good news is that the tech community rallied around Tailwind. Vercel announced they'd sponsor the project. Google AI Studio jumped in. Major companies are pledging support. The framework is too foundational to let die — it literally powers Claude.ai, Vercel, Cloudflare, Shopify, OpenAI's products, and countless other critical infrastructure.

But not every project has that kind of visibility. Not every maintainer can get Guillermo Rauch to tweet about their funding crisis.

Some projects are going the opposite direction. Nuxt, after being acquired by Vercel, made their Nuxt UI Pro completely free and embraced AI-friendly documentation with llms.txt endpoints and MCP server integration. The bet there is that making the framework as accessible as possible to AI tools will drive adoption of the broader ecosystem.

The Developer's Dilemma

As someone who works with development teams and makes decisions about tooling regularly, I find myself in an interesting position. The AI tools that make developers more productive are the same ones disrupting the businesses of tools we depend on.

There's no clean answer here. We're not going to stop using Claude Code because it might hurt some documentation site's traffic. The productivity gains are too significant, and frankly, clients don't care how we build their projects — they care that we deliver quality work on time and on budget.

But it's worth acknowledging that we're in a transition period. The economics of developer tools are being rewritten in real-time. The projects that figure out how to monetize in an AI-mediated world will thrive. Those that don't... well, we might be writing more articles like this one.

The Bottom Line

The Tailwind situation is an early warning sign of what's coming for the entire industry. It's showing us, in stark financial terms, what AI adoption actually looks like when it hits critical mass. Not in surveys or projections or hype cycles, but in the cold reality of a business that can't make payroll because developers stopped visiting their website.

For those of us building with AI, it's a reminder that this shift is real and consequential. For those building developer tools, it's a warning that the old playbooks might not work anymore. And for everyone else, it's probably the clearest signal yet that AI coding assistants have moved from "nice to have" to "how we actually work now."

Twenty years in this industry, and I've seen plenty of "paradigm shifts" that weren't. This one is different. You can see it in Tailwind's revenue numbers. You can see it in the billion-dollar valuations. You can see it in the way junior developers work now versus how they worked two years ago — something I've witnessed firsthand across multiple teams and projects.

The question isn't whether AI is changing software development. That's already answered. The question is what we're all going to do about it.
